Story from 1819 News on the passing of station owner Ivey
Griffin, from May 2025.
[Street View]
Studio and original WJDB AM/FM transmitter location on US-43, south
of Thomasville. From January 2016.
- Owner:
- Griffin
Broadcasting Corporation
- History:
- A little bit about the station is available at their website.
This station was spawned from WJDB AM, which was put on the air by
J. Dige Bishop (as WJDB Radio, Incorporated). The station
originally came on the air in 1972 on 95.3 MHz, with 3 kW at 300
feet HAAT (Height Above Average Terrain), with a CCA FM 3000DS
transmitter feeding a 3 bay CCA FMH LP-3 antenna. It appears
that for much of the station's early existence, it simulcast the AM,
however by the early 80's it broke off to do Country music, with the
occasional pop tune to try and attract younger listeners.
The station was sold to local operator Ivey Griffin (as Griffin
Broadcasting Corporation), along with the AM, in January 1991 for
$325,000.
In 1993, the station was granted a construction permit to move from
their original transmitter location to the current site listed
above. As part of the change, the station moved to 95.5 MHz
and was able to boost power to 9.6 kW. A license to cover for
that change happened in the early winter of 1995.
The station received a permit in 2005 to bump up to a class C2
facility with 40 kW from the WJDB AM tower site, but that permit
expired unbuilt in 2008.
Longtime owner Ivey Griffin passed away in May 2025.
