History:
WWL dates back to the early 20's as one of the nation's oldiest stations. As a 1-A clear channel station, it has a rich history. The station was owned by Loyola University up until the 90's, though it operated as a strictly commercial venture. Has been CBS-affiliated for almost all its history. WWL TV 4 and WWL FM 101.9 were brought into the world by WWL AM. The station was MoR and news/talk from the 50's until the 80's, when the music was phased out in favor of all news, talk and sports. Since the late 60's, however, late night programming has been devoted to interstate truck drivers. The late night country music shows can be heard in almost 2/3 of the country! In the 70's and 80's WWL faced formidable competition from other news/talk stations in the market. They have all faded out and now the station enjoys some of its best ratings ever.
